Massachusetts schools are some of the most segregated in the nation. The result is both a moral failing and a practical barrier to educational excellence.
In the state’s two-tiered school system, districts with primarily Latino, Black, and low-income students struggle with the challenges of schools characterized by very high concentrations of student poverty. Meanwhile whiter, wealthier districts — often minutes away — can afford world-class opportunities.
The disparities are obvious but not inevitable. This report outlines recommendations for Massachusetts policymakers who are serious about charting a path from barriers to belonging.
